Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres"
          (Army Of The Poor)

Violent crimes began with the government and the guerrillas groups. The guerrillas groups were an army of poor people. A civil war began that lasted for 36 years, taking the life of thousands of Guatemalans, and not officially ending until the signing of Peace Accords between the government and guerilla forces in 1996.

After civil war between the government and the guerrillas ending the 36 year conflict that killed 100,000 Guatemalans. Another 40,000 were missing and presumed dead, and another estimated 1 million people were driven from their homes and forced into exile.

"One advantage of me living in the U.S is that I had an accident in 2001 where I was stabed on my head by a gang and was put in the hospital for almost three years. The government gave me support (health benefis) and is continually supporting me money wise because I am currently a disabled person".

"If I were in Guatemala and disabled, I don't think the government would offer me health benefits of any kind".

"Another advantage is that today I am happy to say that after long years of waiting for my citizenship, I finally obtained it in 2004 and I was able to visit my family".

"One disadvantage of living in the United States is that I could not see my family living in Guatemala and that was one of the reasons why my wife left me and got married with another man. My second daughter who is 30yrs. old living in New York, today denies I am her father because she says I left her. Yet she does not understand the circumstances that I had to go through".   ---- [Hugo Perez]
